Right off the bat I knew Suburbicon wasn’t gonna be what I thought.
The trailers for most Coen brothers movies are misleading. A lot of them are sold as ridiculous comedies, when they are much darker in reality. This is exactly that. The trailer used a rap song juxtaposed with a suburban town going crazy, very similar to the trailer for Hail, Caesar! and Burn after Reading. And I actually like Hail, Caesar! A pretty well made trailer, though.
I don’t expect this to be a long review, because there isn’t much that’s actually wrong with the movie. The performances are good, the shots are fine, the music is ok, and even the direction by George Clooney isn’t terrible. The major let down of this film is in the pacing and story. For one, it’s mostly told through Nicky (Noah Jupe), the son of Matt Damon’s character Gardner, and yet we don’t experience the story in the same way as the character, and in a very abrupt way as well. Nearly immediately they kill off Nicky’s mother, played by Julianne Moore, and then almost immediately after that we learn why she was killed, and then we spend the rest of the film just watching dumb scenario after dumb scenario. There’s no mystery to uncover, and you don’t even wanna root for Gardner or Julianne Moore’s other character, Gardners wife’s twin sister, because they both are terrible people who cause all of the problems for themselves.
